All United States dental schools require that applicants take the Dental Admission Test (DAT), administered by the Division of Educational
Measurements of the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association. The DAT is designed to assist the prospective student, his or her advisors, and the dental schools in evaluating the aptitude of the candidate.
The entire test requires one day to administer and tests the following areas: 1. knowledge of natural sciences (biology and inorganic and organic chemistry) 2. reading comprehension (natural and basic sciences) 3. verbal and quantitative ability 4. perceptual ability (twoand three-dimensional problem solving) Dental schools apply different emphases to these parts of the test. Although there is no formal preparation for the test, students who have not taken a basic science course in more than two years are advised to review for the DAT.
The tests are given twice each year in October and April at more than a hundred locations in the United States. Advanced registration is required. Applications can be obtained from either the dental school of the student’s choice or from the Division of Educational Measurements, American Dental Association.
